Frequently Asked Questions
There are a few ways that working at BBI is different than working at other therapy clinics.
- At BBI, you aren’t working on your own. For around half of your caseload you’ll be treating clients with a team, which means additional support and camaraderie on your tougher cases. You’ll also get to split your time between lower acuity weekly patients and more complex IOP patients.
- You aren’t restricted to keeping your therapy in-office. We encourage out-of-office exposures with patients.
- The team at BBI believes strongly in the Science Practitioner approach and are actively engaged in research and patient care at the same time.
The work you do at BBI, while not always easy, is truly life changing. Many of our patients have to pause school or work and concentrate on our services. We exist to be a place where people know they’re getting personal treatment so they can get back to the lives they deserve.
Bio Behavioral Institute started in order to give clinicians the flexibility to do what it takes to help our patients make lasting progress. We’ve found that sometimes means getting out of the office and visiting patients in their home, heading down to the park, a department store, or a coffee shop with them. We don’t just rely on homework or telehealth for our exposures. We want to be there with the patients to see how their symptoms present in their natural environment and use these insights to provide real-time and ongoing support to our patients.
Typically, you’ll work with 20-30 patients per week, depending on the number of IOP patients you are working with.
Our IOP patients are typically with us for 1-6 months, based on their severity, schedule, and goals. Many step down to weekly maintenance once they complete the intensive program.
Many of our OCD patients stay with us for ongoing support. Initially, they are focused on symptom-related treatments, then move to address ongoing quality of life concerns.
Ideally, over the long term, we like to aim for a 50/50 balance between ongoing weekly patients and IOP patients. Initially, this is typically more weighted toward IOP patients while you build up your weekly patients.
We create a monthly calendar for each of our IOP patients. One of the therapists on the team will be assigned the role of team lead and be the main liaison with the family. You'll interact with your team at our weekly all-hands clinical meeting and ad hoc during the week to keep them updated on what happened in your session and vice versa.
Our weekly patients are typically seen for an hour.
IOP patients are typically seen for 1–3 hours during a visit. The 2-3 hour (or more) sessions typically include an exposure or might include a visit to the home or somewhere in the community.
These allow us to witness the patient's ability to engage in the exposure, the problems they encounter, and to see real-life interactions rather than self-reports. This also allows you to modify the exercises accordingly.

You can experience life again. Let’s take steps together.
