The History of BBI

Dr. Yaryura-Tobias was the co-founder and medical director of the Bio Behavioral Institute. He was a truly unique individual and a revolutionary thinker. His breadth of knowledge in medicine, psychiatry, history, and philosophy helped shape his theories and practice as a skilled physician.

During his long and distinguished career as a psychiatrist and researcher, he published hundreds of scientific articles, books, and book chapters. He lectured and taught all over the world.

Dr. Yaryura-Tobias was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he earned his medical degree at the prestigious University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine. He began his training in internal medicine and moved to Canada to complete his internship. After deciding to pursue a career in psychiatry, he trained at the Syracuse Upstate Medical Center and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he also conducted studies on stomach cancer.

He eventually moved to New York and became Director of Research at the North Nassau Mental Health Center in Manhasset, NY. His early research in schizophrenia contributed to the dopamine theories of the disorder. During his tenure at the North Nassau Mental Health Clinic, Dr. Yaryura-Tobias traveled back and forth to Buenos Aires, where he was also Professor of Psychopharmacology at the Universidad Argentina J.F. Kennedy.

His first interest in the field of obsessive-compulsive disorder began in the early 1970s. At that time, there were only a handful of pages in psychiatry and psychology textbooks devoted to OCD. The condition was thought to be rare, and treatment was almost non-existent.

Dr. Yaryura-Tobias was a pioneer in the research of the biological basis of OCD. He authored and co-authored many significant publications during this time, including the 1975 pilot study “The Action of Chlorimipramine in Obsessive Compulsive Neurosis: A Pilot Study,” which he co-published with Dr. Neziroglu. His research grant from Ciba-Geigy in the early 1970s investigating the possible effectiveness of clomipramine was the first double-blind placebo study in the world using this medication for OCD.

His advocacy helped pave the way for FDA approval of clomipramine in the United States. His seminal 1977 paper, “Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders: A Serotonergic Hypothesis,” established the possible connection between serotonin and OCD — a theory now widely accepted and foundational to the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in OCD treatment.

Dr. Yaryura-Tobias also recognized the obsessive-compulsive aspects of Tourette’s Syndrome long before others in the field did. His collaboration with Dr. Neziroglu on the research of OCD led to the publication of their 1983 book, which recognized the connection between OCD and various other disorders — what is today referred to as the “OCD and related disorders” category in the psychiatric diagnostic system.

His passion and dedication to providing scientifically guided treatment for patients with OCD led to the establishment of the Bio Behavioral Institute, which he co-founded with Dr. Fugen Neziroglu in 1979. Together they created a facility that has conducted research, provided evidence-based treatment, and trained countless talented professionals for more than 40 years.

Dr. Neziroglu’s early academic training under visionaries Joseph Wolpe and Edna Foa led to the development of an intensive CBT program at a time when few such programs existed. Together, Drs. Yaryura-Tobias and Neziroglu lectured and trained professionals around the world. In 1996, they established the Bio Behavioral Institute in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where psychoanalytic therapy was the predominant approach to OCD. The institute in Argentina continues to provide scientifically supported treatment under the direction of Dr. Ricardo Perez-Rivera and Dr. Tania Borda.

During his long career at Bio Behavioral, Drs. Yaryura-Tobias and Neziroglu conducted many pharmaceutical clinical trials for nearly all of the early SSRI medications, including Fluoxetine, Sertraline, and Fluvoxamine, as well as studies on Pimozide, Alprazolam, and Venlafaxine. In addition to medication management, Dr. Yaryura-Tobias was trained in the adjunctive use of amino acids and nutritional approaches.

He held many academic positions and hospital affiliations nationally and internationally, including at New York University, Winthrop Hospital, North Shore University Hospital, South Oaks Hospital, Brunswick Hospital, and the School of Medicine at the University of Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina.

His passion for teaching was evident through the countless students he trained. As all of his trainees can attest, Dr. Yaryura-Tobias was always enthusiastic about filling his office with students to discuss new theories and ideas, patiently listening to their perspectives.

He was a founding member of many organizations, including the Academy of Orthomolecular Psychiatry, the International College of Psychosomatic Medicine, the Argentine Society of Biological Psychiatry, and the World Federation of Biological Psychiatry.

In addition to his achievements in psychiatry, Dr. Yaryura-Tobias was the author of several books of poetry and prose in both English and Spanish, including “The Integral Being” and his short story collection “Dios de Dios de Dios.” His poems were featured in the 1975 anthology New Voices in American Poetry, and in 1984 he received an honorable mention for the Federico García Lorca International Poetry Prize. He also won the American Psychiatric Association Prize for Poetry in 1990.

He established the Latin American Poetry Group Circular and served on the board of the Long Island Poetry Collective for many years.

The staff at Bio Behavioral Institute continues to honor his mission — to provide the best, up-to-date care that respects each individual’s social, environmental, psychological, and biological factors.
